Hello world!

Welcome to The Sierra Home Companion. At 4500 feet surrounded by pine trees and crisp mountain air I am writing this blog.

In the next year I am preparing to plant a garden to feed 4, can, make our own bread, and maybe raise a chicken or two. Call me crazy? Perhaps, but my family is well worth it.

Thank you for Fall.

Fall is a glorious season. The colors are rich, the harvest is bountiful, and the air is crisp. There are enough apples to pick for apple pie, applesauce, apple juice, apple cider, and apple slices. Pumpkins for pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, and jack-o-lanterns. Squash for roasting, and decorating. Leaves for raking, and jumping in. Thank you for fall.

If you love to read or you have to many books that you don’t have room for this is a great site to swap for books you want.

How does it work? You sign up, free, and you post books that you have and are willing to depart with, then you are given a credit to go and find a book you want. The book is shipped by media mail, which is slower then regular, however its relatively cheaper. When one of your posted books is wanted you get an email allowing you 48 hours to reply that you will ship this book, if you don’t reply there is no penalty.

I have been using this site for the past year and I’ve swapped at least 10 books, so I’ve gotten 10 books back. The books are in decent shape, and most come with there original book cover. I’ve been very happy with this site, so I hope you get online and see how to share your books.

Enjoy.

For All My Hard Work.

This has made my day.:)

I have to tell you that I’m a little annoyed about the response I get regarding homeschooling. People will not talk to you about the current political climate but everyone has an opinion about homeschooling. People that I see maybe once a year have an opinion about homeschooling. Well I have an idea, stop having an opinion! If we are in a conversation together and you ask me if my son is going to the local elementary school, and I happen so say no I’m homeschooling, don’t immediately become the voice of reason. Don’t! It shows a lack of knowledge on your part, and that leads to ignorance, which leads to me shutting the conversation down.

Would you like to know what to say? Say something like, “wow, you would do a great job at that” or “have you decided on the curriculum?” there are millions of questions you could ask that will not have me feeling defeated.

If you really feel the need to have an opinion than do some research and have actual facts to back up your allegations about homeschooling. Please leave your feelings and your great love of the public school system to yourself. It comes down to tact, people, and I’m trying to educate you in having some tact when you are faced with a similar situation. Chances are good that considering the current political climate I will not be alone in taking my children out of the public school system.

If you are reading this and the person I speak of has been you at one time, then from this point on, please know that moms and dads who decide to home-school are not trying to win a popularity contest. This is a hard decision for most, but an honest one that should be respected at the very least.

Thank you.

Craft Day

Fridays are my day to work in my son’s preschool class, and this Friday was craft day. I’m very impressed with myself in creating the craft out of grocery store shopping bags, cheep paper plates, and crayons.

This is the after. Fall Wreath.

I made 10 of these and there were only 8 kids in class today out of 15 and of those 8 only 5 people participated. I am very proud of this project and I’m glad those kids who did it will have a nice piece of art to hang up during the fall season.
